Industrial hygiene is the recognition, evaluation, and control of hazardous exposures in the work environment. The process begins with a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, identifying potential hazards using different tests. Hazards can be chemicals, particulates, or noise up to certain levels. Examples include nuisance dust or particulates, pesticides, silica, solvents and a slew of other concerns.
The hygienist may use assistants to do the actual testing itself as well as to interpret the data and prepare a report with recommended corrective action on issues found by testing. Once a report is completed the true work of rectifying the issues begins for the facility operator. The CIH reviews the findings and recommendations with the client on the recommended course of action. Once the client implements controls, Environmental Safety Consultants retests to determine if the client’s corrective action was effective. Once all retests are clear the process is completed. Our CIH has a tremendous amount of experience including court testimony. Thus far we have been a part in over eighteen depositions, three jury trials, and one arbitration hearing.
